Buick Regal GS: Handsome, Strong, and Fast

By: · July 24, 2017

I’m going to try to avoid mentioning grandparents in this post, because the days of Buicks coming with AARP cards are officially gone.

It’s taken a while to get to this point, though. In fact, the words “performance,” “sporty,” and “Buick,” were last used together 30 years ago when the Grand National GNX was intimidating Toyota drivers everywhere.

Today’s Buicks are evoking memories of the GNX and making folks forget about the automaker’s stodgy and drab past. Yes, the GM-owned automaker is now building some of the most attractive cars on the road—and providing the performance to go with it.

The Buick Regal is a nameplate steeped in mediocrity, but the latest versions are creating a fire in the hearts of auto enthusiasts everywhere. The new performance-based Regal GS is a handsome devil we weren’t sure Buick would ever build, but secretly hoped it would.

Gone is that gutless turbocharged four, and in is GM’s familiar 3.6L V6 with 310 horsepower and 282 pound-feet of torque, with cylinder deactivation and automatic stop/start. Channeling that power to the twin-clutch all-wheel drive system is a new nine-speed automatic.

Not only that, but the Regal GS gets Brembo brakes, 19-inch wheels, a sport-tuned exhaust, a flat-bottomed steering wheel, and metal foot pedals in addition to all the tech and safety features of the standard Regal.

Oddly enough, the GS won’t come with an option for a manual transmission or even paddle shifters. That’s an unfortunate oversight by GM, but we hope that 9-speed automatic will provide something resembling a spirited driving experience.

If you’re looking for a hardcore performance sedan, this isn’t your car. If, however, you want a great-looking, comfortable, quiet, and sporty sedan, the Regal GS could be the car for you. Pricing for the GS will start at $39,995, with sales beginning early next year.

Even better, your grandparents will never recognize it as a Buick.

Would you consider stepping up to a new Buick Regal GS?
